Tall Grass, 2019

Elizabeth madison tillemans

Tillemans’ work primarily consists of small-scale oil paintings on wooden board. The intimate size of each piece draws the viewer in. Rooted in landscape painting, her spaces are void of any figure, leaving the viewer alone to project themselves into the painting. Her spaces are composed of minimalistic gestures, creating a familiar feeling without being a recognizably specific place. This open-ended imagery allows for a personal conversation between painting and viewer. Clear skies and crisp horizon lines give a sense of clarity to the paintings while the emptiness gives a sense of uncertainty. Familiarity of space gives comfort to the infinite amount of perceived space captured in a small frame. There is a beautiful uneasiness throughout her work, a reflection of one’s own state of being.

Born 1995 in Chicago, IL, she received her BFA from the School of Visual Arts in 2018. The artist lives and works in New York, NY.
